Spices and herbs were originally introduced to Zanzibar by Portuguese traders in the 16th century, brought from their colonies in South America and India. This excursion includes a walking tour of a farm (shamba in Swahili) to learn how tropical spices, herbs, and fruits grow and are cultivated. A guide will describe plants and their uses, and let people smell their fragrances and taste them. Typical tropical spices, herbs, and fruits of Zanzibar include: cloves, lemongrass, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, vanilla, coconuts, papaya, chili, black pepper, jackfruit, cardamom, cassava, and oranges. After the tour, there will be a lunch of traditional Swahili cuisine at the farm.
